Have you ever talked to plants? If yes then this article may interest you: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7973727.stm Edit: Added a poll!
Wow, how timely. I was just thinking about an old book I had read back in the late 70's called "The Secret Life of Plants". It was all about research on different plant life and plants' reactions to being talked to etc.
I talk to them all the time. I just try not to let the neighbors hear me. I thank them for looking so pretty and growing so well. I thank them for their fragrance when I brush by and touch one. I thank them for whatever I cut from them. I apologize when I have to trim them for whatever reason. If I have to transplant one, I let them know why and wish them well in their new spot. I apologize for any neglect and stress that has caused. When I have to pull up a dead annual or perennial that just couldn't make it, I always thank them for what they added to the garden. When I grew cotton plants several years ago, I called them my ladies and greeted them each morning and each time I went out to pick the bolls. I think as a result my 'dwarf' plants grew to well over 5feet tall
I do. I also talk to the birds and squirrels, especially the robins who come so close. Sunday I was digging out the grass from around an old rose bush that has not been doing well for a few years (that is another question for another forum) and there at the very botom was a new shoot. It just brought tears to my eyes and I told her (I imagine she is a she anyway) she was so brave to try again and not give up. I learn so much from my garden plants.
Yes so am I as I talk to mine too. I really think it helps them to grow. I've had sickly plants from the 'Save and Rescue' parts of garden centres that no-one thought would live. With a little TLC and a few encouraging chats they seem to perk up. :-D I also talk to 'my' birds, frogs, toads, newts and, of course, the hedgehogs. Communing with nature is something I think most caring gardeners do.
I also talk to the plants, outside and inside. The neighbours think I'm a lost case. I talk to the animals too, and the birds and bugs in the garden. I sometimes sing to them as well, but try not to be too loud.
I talk to plants and animals and other inanimate objects. They never talk back, except the animals and I only understand a part of it. Chance and I communicate but is it talking? dooley
I like the way you put that DOoley. THey never talk back. I always talk to my plants and my animals, gosh I even talk to the bugs. That is why I am so glad that my dogs also love 'gardening' with me since then it may seem to others that I am talking to the dogs, little do they know that I am talking to the whole garden. Gosh I just realized - we are a weird bunch - we all talk to plants. (THis was after I checked and it seems that no one voted 'no')
Talking with plants Hi Frank I always talk to my plants especially the ones I transplant and my hostas that I have to cut in half, because I have to many I think it may hurt them. The ones I have to plant now that are so young and tender, Im sure I will loose a few of them So I try to talk to them about how beautiful they will be. I know thats a little crazy but thats me, I really do think it helps.God has made some beautiful things in this world flowers and animals are some of those things, I love his beauty, Its all around us.Well have a wonderful Easter and weekend. I really talked to this thing thing trying to move it, what do you think about it? ( photo / image / picture from margie12u's Garden )
With all that 'chatter' I would hope the neighbors didn't hear you! They might call the men in the white coats!
I always welcome my newly sprouted seedlings to the world, and encourage all vegetable growth on the allotment and moan at the weeds. I also compliment the flowers. I am a crrrrrrrazy gardening lady.
We visit every day! I just finished having a discussion with some Philodendrons and a Wandering Jew that has gotten out of hand, and scolded the big Ficus for being so messy! During winter, I go out periodically to check up on all the shivering plants, and encourage them to be patient, spring will be here again soon.
I talked to them all the time... usually encouraging them to grow and flower. Plus I congratulate and thank them when they finally provide beautiful flowers.
