I am Fila, married 24 years, raise pigs and have a giant container garden, over 100 pots of all sizes. I worked at a vet til I shattered a leg that refuses to heal going on 6 months. I decided to go back to school, and to garden for the needy with all the time I now have, all in my wheelchair. I am also vision impaired but none of this has stopped me yet. Looking forward to getting a few edible seeds, trading what I have to obtain them. Texas has a long growing season and I plan on using it to the full extent. Great gardening all, Fila
Hello fila and a big, warm welcome to GardenStew. You must show us some of your containers as we love to share photgraphs here. We have something in common as I used to be a vet. nurse. Sorry to hear that your leg refuses to heal but it sounds as though you still manage to achieve whatever you want to do. I look forward to getting to know you. :-D
Hello Fila, Welcome to our Stew from Central Texas here.I'm sorry to hear you haven't healed as fast as you should. Its great you are making the best of it.

Thanks everyone! I am amazed at the warm welcome but should not be as it seems all plant people are very kind. I accused some in another forum of all really being from Texas they were so kind and friendly. Eventually my leg will heal, very disappointed that it has not in over 6 mos, but feel like everything happens for a reason and that must be because I NEEDED to garden for the needy in the area. i started out being selfish just looking for some 'Ghost' pepper seeds for my DH who has had to take care of me like a baby for several mos and still does so to a certain extent. I felt I could grow him those and some other pepper plants, he makes his own hot sauce and eats it every night, and why not add a few other veggies to facilitate healiong with healthier food. Then he brought hundreds of containers home full of compost, I found peolple on garden websites willing to share extra seeds, so it made sense to see if the local charities for the needy wanted what was sure to be lots of extra produce. When they said they would take everything I felt i was meant to be. Yeah, something to do with purpose! So, here i am. Thanks All, Kathy aka Fila
Hi Kathy, welcome to GardenStew from another Texan. Yes, please show us some pictures of your container gardening. I can't imagine keeping that many containers watered during a Texas summer
I will see about getting pictures. Right now we dont have a camera, but hope to have one next month. Most of the plants are small right now and in a row, sort of, or along the fence. I got a late start but it is ok being in texas. I have all the time in the world and an electric wheelchair and a very long hose. What is fun is when I give them the alfalfa compost tea, one large coffee can at a time, back and forth, back and forth I am trying to come up with an affordable way to catch the water they leak out. The giant containers are the ones that that wont work well with. We have regular okra in one of them, watermelon, squash, cucumbers, strawberries, and tomatoes and oinions in most of the giant ones, will need a ladder to harvest. Right now I am seeing what will do best in what size and what varieties. Very interesting and until you do it, never know. i also have some containers stacked on top of one another. All are the black ones that nurseries have, most are one and three gallon I assume. Kathy aka Fila
Hi Kathy and welcome from yet another Texan. This time from east Texas. I sure hope your leg will be on the mend soon. Sometimes those things take a little longer than the doctor's tell us it will. Make yourself at home and enjoy the Stew. Where about in west Texas are you?
