Hi I'm Lola, aka Gardengrrl, an American living in France. I'm really new to gardening and I'll probably ask a million really stupid questions, so please bear with me! My husband and I have a really old country house that we've been restoring for the past 4 years, and now we're turning our attention to the yard. We hardly know where to begin, so I'm just reading as much as I can about starting a garden for the time being. I look forward to getting to know you all!

Welcome to the Stew from further north in Europe! :stew2: I'm so looking forward to hearing about your projects, and hopefully see some photos too.

Whereabouts in France are you? I used to be slightly francophile but grew out of it.

And I repeat myself ad infinitum: The only stupid question is the one never asked. :D

    Hi everyone -

Thanks so much for the welcomes!

toni - For pictures, it'd probably be easiest if you checked out my blog. I just put a bunch of pictures up there. The address is http:thebeginnergardener.blogspot.com. Don't expect too much - I literally have done no work at all in the yard (except to start a compost pile - which, I now know, I did completely wrong).

Droopy, I'm in Paris but my house is about 2-hrs. to the south in northern Burgundy.

    Yeah, me too. :)

    Thanks again for the welcomes!!

Well, I guess my first question would be: where do a newbie like me post general questions? I've peeked inside most of the forums and my questions are far too general for them. For example, I would like to get opinions on the best way to begin. My yard is virtually untouched - our house was abandoned for many decades before we bought it. I just don't know the best way to go about such a large project. Any thoughts?

If I were you, I'd start by making a drawing of my yard, and try to find out where I want my veggies, herbs, flowers, berries and fruit. If you want borders, there's a lot of digging waiting for you, and it's better with a general plan than to just plunge in and start somewhere that you later find out won't do at all.

I've done that, and the wasted amount of work still annoys me. :D

Once you've figured out what goes where, you can start to ask questions in the sub-forums where your question seems to fit. And you can always use the Village Square.
