Greeting GardenStewies: Not a new gardener, but in my first year of gardening in a new yard and new state. Former Master Gardener (Pierce County, WA). Until now, all my gardening was in Puget Sound, WA (Tacoma area). Veggies, raspberries and strawberries in addition to some annuals and perennials. However, we were surrounded by tall Douglas Fir trees (120' and up) which meant 4 hours of full sun - tops. Gave up on several crops (blueberries, tomatoes, eggplant) due to the lack of sun. Now in the Eugene/Springfield area. New yard/new construction. New raised beds. Full sun for the first time in my life. Brand new landscape beds for my dream collection of plants. Even though I am still in the Pacific NW, this new site has some challenges I haven't encountered yet. Like - wind! To have full sun due to absence of tall trees mean everything is exposed to the wind! I hope to learn from everyone here and offer assistance in areas I am experienced in. Off to find a landscape forum!
You will enjoy your new digs. I too moved from a Doug fir shaded yard to a windy hillside. Do not miss the constant rain of needles. The challenges are interesting. Many of the same principles apply but it is a starting over and figuring out the best practices. You will get the joy of creating a new space.
Another PNW gardener. We are becoming prominent Stewbies. A little about my gardening adventures. Been in my current location/garden for 30 years . Been thru a lot of perennials , annuals, small trees, shrubs, fruits, veggies. The critters are numerous , mostly moles, voles, gophers, rabbits, raccoons, chipmunks, squirrels, deer, antelope, geese and many other larger and pesky wild animals . Living in the country next to a woodland, surrounded by tall Doug fir trees . Looking foreword to a sneak peak at your new garden.
Welcome! It's wonderful to have such an experienced gardener with us. We are a melting pot of people from all ages and backgrounds, from almost every region of the world, except for Antarctica - But we all have one common interest, horticulture! Therefore feel totally at home, as this is where we all fit in perfectly. Looking forward to sharing and learning from you.
