This is in my front yard. I think it's an evergreen, leaves stay on in winter. It blooms only once a year, early spring with delicate red/pink flowers. It also has thorns. I'm trying to find out what it is so I know how or if to prune it. Any help would be appreciated.

correction. It is not an evergreen. I found a winter photo of it. In the background, behind the bird feeder.

No it doesn't. No friuts, berries, nothing. The photos are post flowering. The red leaves are the new growth. This photo is similar to the type of flower (petal formation) but mine are a pinkish red, almost the color of the red leaves.

I wonder if it is some variant of a dogwood shrub?

The flower photo is a rugosa, I just grabbed it off the web because the petals open similar to that. It's not the actual flowers on my shrub. I looked up both the rugosa and the dogwood and it doesn't seem to be either of them. Thanks for your thoughts!
