Help I have a Mulberry Tree that I think is dead however with my husband hope springs eternal. He believes that since the outer edge of some of the branches is green that it hasn't died. When I break off a branch the inside is all brown. It looks horrible. Every leaf that remains is brown. The flowers never bloomed.

    How can we be certain?

Oh dear it doesn't sound like good news for your mulberry I'm afraid Gina. :( Try removing a fairly large limb from the tree as close to the trunk as you can. Is the whole limb brittle and brown inside? What does the tree trunk look like where the limb was removed? If it's clean and white then the tree may still have a chance so I'd leave it until next spring to see if any new shoots appear. Good luck.

    Hi Gina,

Take a sharp knife and scrape off a very small section of bark on the trunk. If the Cambium shows green, than it is still alive. Another thing, pick off a leaf bud for next years growth and see if it is green of dead.

Brown leaves may be a sign of stress and lack of water. Foliage will brown first along the edges and then the whole leaf.

When a plant is stressed, it goes into survival mode and drops leaves.

If it is alive, water deep every week until ground freezes or snow flies.

    Hope your tree is okay.
