My Rosemary is so large (about 3 feet tall and very bushy) but lately it has developed something that looks like webs on some of the limbs. This is also going on with my thyme. The two plants are in the same bed but it's a rather large bed and they are not close by each other. I'm desperate to save the Rosemary --- any advice?
You could have spidermites, they appear to be a problem this year. Spidermites are tiny, about the size of the period at the end of this sentence. You could use a soap and water spray to clean off the plants. If you have a hose end sprayer, fill it with water and squirt in dish soap (about as much as you would use for a sink full of dishes). Sometimes just a spray of plain water will wash them off too. Spray the affected plants every few days to catch the newly hatched ones. If you have a good garlic spray that you like to use, that would work too.
I'm all about the soapy water method, it's never failed me yet. I'm growing Rosemary and Thyme together, also. Is your Rosemary that big in it's first year? If so, any tips would be gladly appreciated!
Rosemary Thanks for the soapy water tips --- I never knew that. This is the Rosemary's second summer - it was about six inches high when I bought it last year. It stayed green and grew all winter, which is why I was concerned when it started looking strange. This spring I moved it to a new bed. It's planted in full sun and gets a lot of water, however, I rarely watered it last winter.
My rosemary has been in the same place for six years. It is huge. I hardly ever water it even in our day weather. I cut it back quite a bit and it's growing to replace what I cut. I just use the hose and spray away any webs, etc and it looks okay. dooley
Spider mites and soapy water was my first thought but looks like that's covered for ya I had a hort instructor who was a hard-core bonsai enthusiast, he'd prune up rosemary and contort it using wires to hold it, made the most AMAZING kitchen bonsais ever!
