not sure this is the right place to post, but here goes..... my sister-in-law and her husband have a cabin they are building near knoxville, tennessee area, and she wants to plant some perennials in the fall the next time they are there. she asked me if i could help her pick some. i am not sure what planting zone their property is in and what plants would be suitable. so i figured i'd start at the best place i know for answers and suggestions. is there anyone from near that area that could advise me/her on what her planting zone would be and plants would be suitable for that zone? any help and suggestions would be appreciated. :?:
That would be Zone 7a or 7b and as long as zone 7 is in the middle of the zone range for the plant it will be good one for the area. What you need to also know is shade or sun and native to the area. A native plant will survive on it's own in a garden that isn't tended very often more readily than a non-native. Check out this list Zone 7, Perennials There are a lot to choose from for that zone. Check the garden centers in that area to see what they carry too but sometimes they will carry plants that are not all that well adapted to the area because some gardeners like to push the envelope when it comes to planting zones
I agree with Toni--native plants are the way to go! The Tennessee Native Plant Society has a website with information, pictures, and probably a contact. http://www.tnps.org She could even have roses as long as she doesn't choose hybrids. The antique roses have survived on their own at old home sites and in cemeteries for years. They are pretty, and fragrant, too.
thanks, marlingardener and toni...i will pass the website info onto her, and encourage her to go with natives as much as possible.
