Since he retired, my husband has become quite a chef! He craves fresh herbs & rather than spending $4 a shot, I am growing them outside our kitchen door.

Oh, WOW, what a great, healthy looking herb garden. I would love to have something like that outside my door, I don't cook with many herbs but the plants are gorgeous.
Think I will show this to hubby.....but what herbs will go with fried Spam and black-eyed peas? He is so afraid I will turn the cooking over to him when he retires...hahahahahaha.

Cayuga, that is a wonderful, prolific herb garden! Having the herbs right outside the kitchen door is the very best place for them--easy to get at, and the herbs hit the kitchen absolutely fresh! I couldn't do without my "just outside the door kitchen herb garden."
I see basil, chives, parsley, rosemary. What else are you growing and using?

Thanks guys. I have been having fun with it. You have a good eye MG. In addition to the basil, chives, parsley & rosemary, I have garlic chives, oregano, mint, summer savory, sage, & cilantro. The rest of the plants are hostas, cannas, & various flowers. Oh and an amaryllis left over from X-Mas. And a bunch of dahlias and a stray lettuce that somehow showed up. :)

I would really love to have herbs growing outside the back door like you have. Everything tastes much better when it's freshly picked and added to your homemade dishes.:)

The herbs and flowers are very nice looking together and all look happy together. I've read that herbs and flowers help each other when planted near each other. Your plants seem to prove it.

Lucky you CM to have a DH who loves to cook! Fresh herbs make so much difference. I remember the first time i cooked a turkey with fresh home grown sage stuffing inside. We had left the house for awhile while the turkey was cooking in the oven and upon returning, we were maybe 2 blocks from the house when we started smelling something not exactly identifiable, but pungent and getting stronger as we approached the house. O lordy, i had used about 20 times too much sage...not taking into account the difference in potency between fresh sage leaves and old powdered dry stuff. I think it was about that time that i started seriously thinking of becoming vegetarian, which i did and remain so to this day.:)

Vitrsna, your sage story reminds me of the time our next door neighbor asked for some of our garlic to add to her green beans for Thanksgiving dinner (this was when we lived in town). I gave her a head of garlic and said, "You may want to use less, since this is home-grown and more potent." About an hour later the distinct odor of garlic wafted over to our house. She didn't know what "potent" meant, but she soon found out!

Thanks guys. Yes, I am trying to get a blue thing going on there. Out of sight is a blue painted Adirondack chair where I can sit a midst the herbs & have my morning coffee.

Your herbs look so nice there. Handy too.
I also like the bricking sidewalk. That looks spiffy.

Good for you! You are definitely saving money and you're just a step away from fresh herbs anytime in your meals. (I like mint for tea). :)
