So glad I found this site. What I've seen so far is great. Our summer has been very dry and I'm afraid neglected my flowers. BUT I've had a trumpet vine for 3 years that has not bloomed until this week. I was elated ! I'm sure I'll get encouragement from here to get on the ball with that watering.

    Hi Donna
Welcome to Gardenstew from southern Ontario!
I have the same problem with watering my gardens. Have you ever considered drought tolerant plants? :D

Hi Donna, welcome to GardenStew from north Texas. Glad to have you with us.

My yard went a little over 8 weeks this summer without a drop of rain and even tho I watered every 36 hours during that time I lost some plants.....so what couldn't survive that drought doesn't get replaced next spring! Going out in the heat to drag hoses around is not fun, but doing it before 8 a.m. or after 7 p.m. was a bit more comfy.

Donna, welcome! You'll find everyone here helpful and friendly (also sympathetic when disaster strikes the garden).
We have rainbarrels to catch the rain from our house roof, and are installing a 250 gal. container to get the barn's runoff. Have you considered having rain barrels to store water until it is needed?

The rain barrel is a great idea but it wouldn't work here for a couple reasons. We haven't had enough rain to catch and the mosquitoes are so bad I don't want any container of water sitting. So I guess I just need to get on the ball and pull out that water hose. Thanks for responding !!

The water is collected from roof runoff, into the gutters and thru the downspout that goes in the hole of the rain barrel. It only takes roughly 1/4 inch of rain to fill up a 55 gallon barrel. The run off from the roof amounts to more than you would think.

Also, for mosquito control get some Mosquito Bits (made by the same people who make Mosquito Dunks but so much more effective). Sprinkle a couple of tablespoons in the barrel every week to keep any larvae in there from maturing and there will be no mosquitoes.
I use them in all my water plant pots and the two rain barrels I have.

Hello Donna M, and welcome to the Stew from a country with plenty of rain. We could probably spare some for you and for half of Sahara, if only we could find a way to ship it. :D

Hop in and make yourself at home. You won't see much of me until winter's set in but then I'll be back with a vengance. :D

Welcome from Illinois. We have had more rain than we need here this year. It makes for great growing weeds.
