I retired a while ago and we bought a great house close to my wife's work. It's on a quiet dead end street and sits on an acre of land. My goal is to cut my mowing in half. I built a 20x30 deck and boardwalk in the back and landscaped about a third of the backyard. Now I'm starting on the front. I'm looking for tips on planting this late in the season when everything is on sale.
Welcome to Gardenstew. I lived in Kenosha for about 35 years. All three boys went through school there. We moved to Arizona in 89 and here to Texas last year. Have fun planting your garden. dooley
When is your average date of first freeze? If it's sometime in October then plants you get in the ground this month should have enough time to establish their roots system before dying back. Be sure to buy plants that are winter hardy in your area, preferably ones that are native. If you have a backroom, garage or shed that you could keep heated above freezing you could pot them up and keep them in there until time to plant in the spring. I am in the process of turning our entire front yard into a garden so hubby won't have to mow anymore and he is ecstatic Oh, yeah, welcome to GardenStew from north Texas. :-D
Hi Kerry, Welcome to the Stew from the East Side of the Big Lake. I like your thinking. Go native and natural and create a nice wildlife habitat. And yes, a good time to shop. Ron
Hi from another Packer fan in northeast Wisconsin (although I will also have to be watching Brett Farve in the Minnesota games!). You can successfully plant most anything now, although it's getting a little late for evergreens...they need a longer time to develop a root system before the winter sets in. If you do find any on sale, just be sure to give them lots of water until the ground freezes (and using a concentrated root stimulator right after planting would also help to prevent transplant shock).
Welcome from Wisconsin's great North Woods. We are Mequon Folk, retired to Land O' Lakes. Good luck with your planting. Tom
Hi Kerry, I'm new here as well yep, nothing like tearing up the grass to make more room for flowers Have Fun Wolfie
