Well, maybe they would protect you if really they needed to, I don't think ours will... last night we had a "visitor" (we knew him, he wasn't a stranger) run in the back door...followed by several deputies (like 10 or so) several minutes later... (long story and not really the kind to share, either) and I think Maya licked every one of them. She was soooo happy to see all of our unexpected exciting  company. I said "come on in in the middle of the night and I think she will be the same". They all loved her. I am glad they all stayed in the kitchen(pretty much) and it only took 5 minutes to clean up the floor (all the mud) once they were all gone. Honest... I don't think I have a guard dog by any stretch of the imagination and yours don't look so dangerous either.

Our insurance co does not like guard dogs.We have always had Dobermans & hubby was taking dog out back door as insurance man was at front door. Our present dog is a Doberman mix & would get by.She looks more like lab & I think there is some coon hound in her gene pool.
She is a good watch dog.Hope I never have to put her to a test.

We had a Golden Retriever/St. Bernard mix who loved children, other dogs, cats, and almost anything that moved. A "magazine salesman" came to the door once, and decided he'd just come on inside. My sweet, lovable, kind and gentle 90 lb. dog turned into a snarling, lunging beast. I swear he puffed up to twice his size. That man beat all world records getting off my porch and back to the road!
Our other Collie/St. Bernard mix was a dog who expected us to handle all situations. If an intruder tripped over him while he was napping, that was as far as he was willing to go in the guard dog mode!

Jane, my sister has a golden Lab for the past 10 years or so and he went after the Schwans man (door to door ice cream/food truck salesman) as soon as he came to the door. I don't think he liked that man at all. He never bothered anybody except men who came calling during the day such as the UPS man and the Schwans man...I am glad he isn't my dog, thats for sure.

They're absolutely useless guard dogs and just want to be loved and fussed by everyone :D However, they make fantastic Watch dogs and alert the entire neighbourhood to strangers, which is excellent if it means that anyone with bad ideas gets put off and they won't have barked in vain.

I don't think a person can afford a cross dog. You stand to lose $$$ if it should bite someone. Our insurance won't cover it.Dobermans have a bad rap, though. Ours were very loving dogs. One we adopted was picked up as a stray in Chicago. If an intruder had threatened us I believe he would have taken him.I still get teary when I think of that dog.

I would like to know where your guard got his training....I just may take my little guys to get trained there too. It must have been expensive.....

I don't know but I seriously doubt that you have Opossum in the UK. You do however, have foxes and if the dogs have taken lessons from the sly ol' fox they are wide awake and have their eyes shut. They listen but do not move and will only 'awaken' if a stranger approaches. Thus, they get their rest time and family leave them alone. Very smart dogs. :)
