The Honey Locusts are blooming and the air smells so sweet. But the hummingbirds are as happy as can be!

I have about 30 of these on my property.

The trees behind it are Black Locust. They bloom, but the bloom is real small and yellow. A dull yellow at that.

What a show stopper that tree is. With 30 on your property the air must smell delicious. I can see why the hummingbirds enjoy them so much.

We used to have so many honey bees in them that the trees would hummmm. Now not so much. The bees have really gone down in population the past several years.

Capt, I didn't know that honey locust bloomed. I guess I have never seen that. I know they are a hybrid, but I am thinking they don't set seed. Is that correct?

Black Locust makes the best honey. I have had it once in the last 15 years of having bees. It is almost clear and has the most delicious taste. It doesn't taste like any other honey. I am hoping for some this year. Every year we seem to have cold wet weather just as the blossoms pop open.

They do set seed, but tend to propagate through their root system. They will send out roots and then sprout new trees from their roots.

Well. Our black locust are blooming and the back yard smell divine. They started day before yesterday. Rained last night, getting cold today, frost for the next three nights, so... probably means no black locust honey crop again. *sad and crying* :( :( :( :( :( I can hope and pray though.
