I found a newsletter from North Haven Gardens here in Dallas all about growing Hostas in Texas. They say that some new hybrids will tolerate our long growing season, will grow in dry shade, high humidity and normal to clay soil. So Sweet Sugar and Cream Francee Invincible Patriot Blue Angel Sum and Substance Guacamole - This one is made for Texas Summer Music Sun Power Bold Ribbons Day Break Aphrodite Emily Dickinson Queen Josephine fragrant Bouquet Sagae Shade Fanfare Honeybells I found a couple of mail order plant companies that carry some of them, I think I will have to try some next year.
I've seen a few of those varieties here Toni-Sum and Substance is a nice one with giant leaves. I have a Francee and a Patriot. I must warn you...collecting Hosta's is addicting!
I found several of them on the BlueStone Perennial website and they mention the two totally different growing areas....yours and down along the Gulf Coast in zones 8,9 and 10. So I figure since I am between those two extremes I might have a chance of getting them to live. I need something that will be showy in the shade bed. It's funny, back in the late 80's early 90's I didn't even garden yet but I would lust after the Hostas I saw at garden centers. At K-Mart they were mainly displayed in May as Mother's Day gifts.
These are in our or mother's garden, toni. The Sagae is the largest we've got. Huge thing. I wish you the best of luck with growing some of the hostas on your list.
