I have a huge pine tree in the front yard. I was thinking of putting in a few hostas around it. Is that a good idea?

So Tina, They like slightly acid soil and I would think that under the pine tree would be just that. Look and see what I have done with my old oak tree in my front garden. This is when the garden was very young.

You may have to water the plants more often as the tree uses a lot of water.

I have to water all newly planted ones but with the mulch we have used, once the plant becomes established, I never water.

    I do love that mulch.

I think it's a great idea! We have several Hosta beds below Spruce trees at work and they do well.

There's something stuck in the back of my mind from somewhere that says things won't grow well under a pine. But your lawn looks great under it... so I guess it's not true? :headscratch:

I also heard the same thing, Cherylad.
That's why the question. I hope it is not true. Yesterday I dug out the thyme from my old house and planted it under the pine since I didn't have anywhere else to put it. Do you guys think it will be ok? Thyme is my favorite ground cover and I don't want it to die. I can move it if needed, I will post a pic after I reach home.

Your flower bed around your pine tree looks exactly like the bed I have around my live oak tree in my front yard! I'm undecided what to put around the tree this year. Really want perennials. Tired of replanting every year. Will post a picture for suggestions.
