We still have house martins nesting under the eaves of rooves and in the corners of window frames here in Scotland even although it's almost the middle of September. Here is a nest I found on Monday. Two of the babies are poking their heads out waiting for a feed. :-D You can also see the individual blobs of dried mud that goes into the making of these wonderful structures by the parent birds.
We had a similar experience this summer. Barn Swallows built their mud nest in the eaves of my garage. They tormented my poor cat to death! They were quite interesting to watch, kind of messy too Deanna :-D
WOW! What a fantastic picture. I've never seen anything quite like that nest, it's just an amazing piece of work. Those two little faces are so precious.
What a cute picture Eileen! Those little birds are famous for dive bombing anyone or anything going close to their nests. Ask my phone repair man!
What a lovely photo, Eileen! I've always wanted a barn with swallows nesting in it. They are so graceful. They are also quite intelligent. A local factory had a swallow's nest in one of the halls. The birds managed to trigger the gate censor by flying right in front of it. That hall gate went up and down seemingly all by itself for a season. Good job they worked around the clock, or their security people might have been a tad annoyed.
Such a nice picture...we get barn swallows in the spring and early summer and they like to fly around you when you are mowing the lawn and arousing all the bugs. I wish they would stay around here longer...they are such great bug eaters...
