I know there was a post last year, I think, that gave instructions on how to figure this out and I thought I wrote it in my notebook.
I have an area 24x24 feet. How many cubic feet or yards will it take to lay down a good thick layer of shredded mulch?

    Thanks Toni...
I've written down the formula this time.
So... since my brain is a little fried from being out in the sun all day.
    Does this sound close?

    24x24 feet = 576 sq. ft.

1 cubic yard of mulch = 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep.

So... 576 divided by 108 = 5.33 cubic yards of mulch?

And to think math was my best subject in school!
