Hi, Know that I have ask you about the 2 bushes about the zinnias and the other purple one does anyone know how to to get the seeds from them? Thank you Margie moderator's note: added a more descriptive title to topic moderator's note: moved topic to more appropriate forum
The red plant in the other photo is a Dahlia Margie. That means that it has tubers that you can dig up, save indoors and replant outside again next year.
Margie, If the zinnias are not hybrids, you can let a few flowers dry on the plant, and then pick them off and gently beat the seeds out of the dried flower heads. I do this over a sheet of paper, which makes gathering the seeds and putting them into a paper bag easier. I put the paper bag with the seeds in a cool, dark place ( our pantry, but a refrigerator would do just as well) until it's time to plant them in the spring. I mention that you probably won't want to collect seeds from hybrids because they could be sterile, and if not, they will not breed true to type.
Dahila How do you know if they are hybrids or not, Is there a way to find out? So you think the purple is a zinnia, I'm not sure. Thank you Margie
Margie, The only way to know if your zinnias are hybrids is to look up their name, e.g. "State Fair," on the 'net and see if they are listed as a hybrid. Of course, if you still have the seed packet, it will tell you whether the flowers are hybrids or not, also.
Hello! I go to my Dollar Store around the way right before spring and they usually have seed packets of a variety of flowers and veggies 5 for a $1!!! That is where I get mine every year. I haven't grown any Hybrids. I love them though because they are bold and bright and bloom up until @ November here in Maryland.
