I bought a asparagus plant 2 years ago and it has been in a pot in my house its whole life. it grows great. i get new growth about every 2 weeks. so my questions are....... how hardy is asparagus? will it live if i plant it in the garden even though it has been inside for 2 years? and how long does it take before it starts producing veggies? as of know it just shoots up branches moderator's note: added a more descriptive title to topic
I live in VT and we grow asparagus here. It is a very hardy vegetable. It however has to be planted in a very special way. I would look at the directions. Have fun. http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/vegetab ... us-bed.htm
I am in the south so it is very hardy here !! I think that if you planted it outside and mulched well in the winter it would be fine !! It goes dormant in the winter and puts up spears in the spring !! These spears if not eaten will become the light feathery plant as it grows !! Usually the third year you can start picking the spears on a limited basis !! Before that you want to let the plant multiply and develop the root system !! I would buy some asparagus crowns and put all in a permanent bed that can be left alone a while !! After that you will have some fine eating !!!
Asparagus is hardy here in zone 5 dimdim. In fact, it is so hardy here that it grows wild along the road sides! I also have some out in my garden and have never found that it needs any special attention. It does need a couple of years to get established before picking.
thanks to everyone for the info. i planted it today and will be waiting for the big day! also got the tatters in the ground! now we play the waiting game :-D
