Apple butter is used on your bread just like a good jelly or jam sandwich.

Have no idea why its called butter? It isnt that.

Lets say it is an extended apple sause. With spices in it.
    Cinnamon
    cloves
    nutmeg
    allspice
    brown sugar
apple juice (I just used water)

Cooked in my dutch oven on top of the stove.
    Love it .

Apple butter on biscuits is one of my favorite things in the world... Oh! Reminds me of when I was little.... yum.

Now, how can we describe apple butter to Sjoerd????

Barb, how long do you cook yours for? Sjoerd, you cook it for a long long time until the sugars get really concentrated and it turns brown, right Barb?

I haven't make Apple Butter in years, I may have to do that this next weekend.

Sjoerd, Apple Butter is a very thick apple sauce. The name 'butter' refers to it's smooth, thickness and because it is spread on bread. Great on buttered biscuits, raisin bread, toast of all sorts.

Soon as I smelled it cooking, it made me think it was fall.
    Smelt like fall.
Guess you have to put yourself into apple picking season, with cider an apples .
Was great pretending it was fall.

Probably make more bisquits 2 maro to go .

Here is a link from Wikipedia. I had no idea that this was a significant early American southern thing.... I just thought it was what we did....and what we ate.

Maybe I will make some this weekend too. Even if I don't, it is a warm memory.... I remember sitting with my mom eating apple butter sandwiches... and just talking away with her about this or that. I could eat two or three of those apple butter sandwiches!!! Thanks, Barb!

Thank you Daisy, B and Toni for making the concept of "apple butter" understandable to me. It actually sounds tasty to me, as I have a hopeless sweet tooth.
Thank you Daisy also for the link.

It sounds familiar to me, now that I hear what it is. I shall have to sniff around. I am wondering if that wasn't made here a long time ago.
