My Sage just shriveled up and died. It was watered and mulched along with my other herbs, but didn't make it. Any special care needed? Gardengater
I'm in zone 5 and my sage gets absolutely no attention from me. I don't water it or mulch it. They only problem I have is mice that feed on it in the winter, but it always grows back nicely.
Is it Salvia officinalis you're talking about? I'm equal to zone 7, and do like Netty does. We mixed lots of sand in the soil since our winters are wet, and it's getting lots of sun. (If the sun is out, that is.) I don't water it, since it's from the Mediterranean and probably likes it dry.
My Sage is out of control! I wish I could give you some . I've got it in a pretty crowded planter and read somewhere it wouldn't grow much the 1st year, which didn't turn out to be true at all. I also think it might be over watering that killed it, that's why I keep a lot of my herbs in metallic planters with LOTS of holes. It's a fudge proof system for plants that like it on the dry side.
I am going to have to remember that as our soil has a very high clay content and I want to try to grow some sage. I enjoy cooking with it and use it to cleanse out the house energy as well.
