First we have the very attractive green leaves of the columbines. Most or them have the same type of leaves, no matter what types. 2nd is the actually bloom of the columbine knocked over by the rain. 3rd When the flowers drop off the plant your plant will have pods looking like these , green. Do not touch the pods , let them turn brown. I will post when mine have turned brown an when to pick. Hope this helps . b
Open one of the pods an see if the seeds look black . If it falls easily out in your hands . Do you have a camera to show me? Usually done when it opens easily an seeds roll out. b
Just like you said -- opened easily and the seed rolled right out, and onto the ground! They are tiny! I'll be able to collect a lot. Is it the same process for other perennials? With some, like the pink sundrops, the spent blossom seems to just disappear.
