Spices are an interesting lot. Often we start out with salt and pepper then we try mom’s recipes and accumulate more. We buy a cookbook and this opens the flood gates. In some cases the cook books are printed by the spice company, at that point all bets are off. The shelf becomes crowded and the seldom used spices move to the back to be lost in the dark recesses never to be seen again. Some we ‘lose’ and purchase a replacement only to locate the ‘lost’ spice a few days later. To ‘organize’ the spice shelf it becomes a rotating spice carousel perhaps even two. No mater which way you rotate the rack it’s always the longest way to the spice you want. I looked for a solution after the salt and pepper revolted. The cellar stairway had an unused wall. What if……… Days later, the new spice wall was ready, loaded with spices minus salt and pepper. Locating a spice was easy. Each level went with the stairway so reaching any spice was not difficult. The salt and pepper were happy, each had their own carousel in the former spice shelf. Recipes were happy, redundant spices fell to zero. The narrow stairway limit the full view of the spice wall to an angle. A bit awkward but viewable. Stairway Spice Wall ( photo / image / picture from Jerry Sullivan's Garden ) Jerry
I love using little nooks and crannies for handy things like that. I love it. And each shelf even has a barrier to keep the spices from jumping off out of frustration when you choose the spice next to them and not them.
Wow, that's so neat looking Jerry. I think most people are familiar with the relegation of spices to the back of a shelf so your solution is great. You are an equal opportunity spice user I really like your spice layout also Barb. All easily accessible.
Oh how I wish I had wall space where I could have all my herbs and spices displayed like that. I have a large kitchen drawer full (two layers deep) but it's a real pain to find the one you want.
I don't have a stairway near my kitchen but I am going to start looking for some place I can utilize like this. Thanks for the idea!
WOW!!!! I am jealous...mine are all on a revolving dish in my cupboard. A few months ago I threw everything away and replaced them with the ones I used the most...Great idea
The spice rack is something we cobbled together on a whim after we moved in and discovered that teeny jars would be completely lost in the kitchen’s drawers and shelves.
