Our local Humane Society runs what they call a Feral Cat program. You can take a feral cat it and have it spayed for merely $40. At the local vets it would run $90 or higher. We took the Momma cat in yesterday and had her spayed. They are nice as can be and did a superb job. We have several more of the kittens that need it, but have to wait until they get bigger. If you have a feral cat problem in your neighborhood, check with your local Humane Society to see if they have such a program.

Bless you, Captain! Would you like to come be our neighbor? We could use a responsible cat person around here :) . Other than ourselves, of course. Feliz was neutered at 7 months, after we had fed her up and she was strong enough for surgery.

There should be more socities like yours CK as feral cats can be a huge problem in an area if they're allowed to keep breeding. Good for you making sure that there aren't lots of unwanted kittens around.

We have that too :p It's not the Humane Society but a private lady that started "Friends of Pets", a no kill cat shelter. She is AMAZING!! She has worked with the vets in town to get cheap surgeries for the cats. I think we paid $15 to have the boys neutered and $20 to have momma spayed. She will lend you a live trap, give you a certificate and send you on your way. The vet clips the cat's ear so when you see a cat with a funny looking ear hanging around the food bowl you know he or she has seen the vet :p More places should do this! I try to donate a few bucks to this lady a few times a year. I love what she is doing!

We've got the FACE clinic here in Indy. Cats are only $20 to spay/neuter. Dogs are priced by weight, up to $55. Pit Bulls and Pit mixes are $20. And if you live in certain zip codes around the city, they'll do the cats for free! They also do vaccine packages. I wish more people would get their pets fixed!
I wish Id known about this place years ago when we had 8 cats, all related. We couldnt afford to take them all to get fixed at the vet. I think they were all eventually given to new homes and some to the Humane Society (ours is a no-kill, although the animal control shelter on the south side does!).

The Humane Soc. here will take kittens in also. They will then give the adopter a gift certificate to have the kitten fixed for free when they are big enough. They can adopt out kittens very easily, but not many people want grown cats. People here support the Humane Soc. very well. They recently raised over $100,000. for a new addition. And the whole operation is run on donations and county govt. funds.

Capt, You are a good man! We get all kinds of strays in the neighborhood and I see some of them don't make it....splat. it makes me so disgusted that people drop their pets off out in the country for the "good life" not comprehending how territorial other cats and carnivore are... Poor things get hit on the road, starve to death or fought to death.:scheming: :scheming: :scheming: :scheming: :scheming: :scheming: :scheming: :scheming: :scheming: :scheming: uh huh! the nice county life for their beloved pets.

we had a kitten who had a litter at 9 months of age ( :scheming:  tramp!) and we took her and all the kittens we couldn't stand to part with and had them all fixed at a vet that was incredibly reasonable. When we called to have another one done he had retired and his daughter took over. She must be living higher on the hog than him because I couldn't afford to have that clinic do anything more . So now I use a local vet for the work as there is no humane society close enough to use :( .

Here the biggest enemy of cats, beside cars, are coyotes. We have lost 3 cats from one litter to them. They didn't show up on any of the roads so it must have been the coyotes.

Capt. we also have a program here in the Green Bay, Wis area that will fix a feral cat for pretty cheap.
4 wks ago we had a very skinny cat hanging around our yard. So we put food out for it and it started to come regular for feeding.
When I finally saw it up close I could not believe how starved and skinny it was. I also hate people who just dump off their animals figuring it will beable to fend for it self.
Then I started taking to it and the cat talked back. I know right there that it was not a feral cat. So after a few days it would let you pet it and pick it up. So we took it in to the humane society to see if it was micro chipped. Not so. But I knew that it would find a good home.
After we got back home they called and asked us if we had any of our own cats or if our neighbors had cats. I said no and they told us that the reason the cat was so skinny is that it had feline aid's. I almost feel off of my chair.
They said it was very contagious to other cats and that they put it to sleep. I know I have seen other cats out here in the country. I just hope none of them came into contact with this poor sick kitty.
How could anyone drop off a cat that was so sick. :(
