We went out to do a few errands this morning and when we came back the porch was humming. Look at these pictures of my hummingbird feeders. Do bees migrate? I don't know where they came from but they were on the feeders all day. The hummingbirds would zoom up and then back away. dr says he will go take them down when it gets dark because they won't stay after dark. I hope not. I wonder if he takes them down if they will come looking for them tomorrow. The hummingbirds might. I need to clean them out and refill them after all these bees. dooley
What a sight! I guess those guys were loading up on sugar before hibernating. Regular honeybees don't migrate, I think that they were just being opportunistic. It is amazing to see.
Let's hope those bees have all had their fill now so that your hummingbirds can get a look in tomorrow Dooley. :-D
I had someone tell me that if a bee gets into your feeders , it lets off a poison when it dies in the liquid and it can kill the hummingbirds if you don't change it right away....I have never had that many on my feeders, I think I might quit feeding if I did and just plant more flowers. My DH is allergic to stings.
That's something to see, Dooley. Sjoerd, what do the bees do now? Do they spend the winter underground or in their hives?
You might want to try spreading a little of Vick Vapo Rub on the bottom of the feeder... might help... but then again, that's alot of bees!
They are probably getting ready to swarm and then go into a place to stert a new hive.It could be they may hive up under your roof.
Eeek indeed. That would certainly put me off having the feeder on my front porch. I hope they all went away and you were able to clean the feeder ready for the humming birds.
We brought the feeders inside last night. This morning and most of the day there were a few flying around but not near as many as yesterday. We'll see how long they stay around without the feeders out. dooley
The bees get pesky here too, but not until fall before they hibernate. You have the "killer bees" down by you don't you? I might be a little leery of putting out sugar water if they were around here. I guess there are some good things about Wisconsin winters!!!
Glenda, what do they do? Do they all gather together before they make a new hive? That's very interesting. I wonder when they know it is time to leave one hive to make another?
Yes,That will bunch up and sometimes be a ball as big as your head.They are covering the queen I think.My dad would take a hive neat them and take his pocket knife and start pecking on the hive and they would go into the hive.Then daddy would have a new hive of bees.
