I have a hydrangea that bloomed wonderful for two years and then last year, it didn't bloom at all. I missed those beautiful blooms so much! I have done some research on the web and it seems to say that if a frost comes in late spring then it can make you not have blooms so I decided thats what happended last year, so this year I have been covering it at night when frost is possible...but my greenery is only coming up from the ground, not on the sticks...I read that is bad, that frost might have gotten it...I have never pruned it at all. WHAT DO I NEED TO BE DOING TO GET BLOOMS EACH YEAR? SHOULD I COVER THEM UP IN THE WINTER AND SPRING? I am stuck, how do I get my plant to bloom again? Thanks so much!
Hi there Matlock. :-D WELCOME to GardenStew. I would cut away all the dead stalks from your hydrangea and allow the new shoots to grow. If there is any chance of more frosts to come in your area then I would keep your plant covered until they have well and truely past. Your hydrangea may not flower this year but if you feed, water and give it some TLC it should be fine for next year. That's a common problem here. When mine freeze to the ground they don't bloom. Some years I forget to put wire around them and the rabbits eat the older stalks and same thing. I would do the burlap cover in the winter and don't remove it until it is sure enough spring. Good luck. I also hate it when mine don't bloom. 8)
