Check this out. I heard about it back in the summer on the evening news but lost the info I wrote down. Finally remembered to do a google search and found their website. The idea of doing this has been in the back of my mind for a couple of years. Randy hates to mow, I hate to waste water on a lawn that then just needs to be mowed and right now our front yard is truly wasted space. 'http://www.fritzhaeg.com/garden/initiatives/edibleestates/guidelines.html' Frank, move this topic if you feel it should be somewhere else. I couldn't decide between here, Garden Design, Fruit and Vegetable gardening.
I bookmarked the site. You already know how I feel about huge expanses of ugly lawn. There are two obstacles that would have to be overcome: The house sits on an acre lot, on a corner. And the ground is so low, we have named the house crawdad flats.
I love the concept - I've thought about turning one of our lawns (we have 3) into something more gardeny...may do so yet... but don't have one that faces any kind of traffic. I love this idea, using the monotony of a housing project to jazz it up.
I've used up most of the grass already in our garden. I know - I'll move to somewhere with a couple of fields going spare!!! Looks good to me Toni - I'd give it a go if I had more space. :-D
Go for it toni .I have an entire backyard I would love to have something like this going on there Maybe ,I will think about this.It will be such a big project I don't know if I could do it.
Toni I decided to move this topic to Fruit & Veg I think it's a great idea as lawn space is just wasted and takes a lot of maintenance. What better than to get some free food from it. One reservation I would have though is that it could be easy pickings for hungry veg thieves. It would be great if you started it Toni as you would get more exposure for the project through this site
Wow. That is going to be interesting for the chosen home owners. I love that all the costs will be paid and that there will be assistance in the design. Good luck.
I think you are getting something from your cache, Toni. I just did several searches and found only 404s. Maybe they are updating the site.
I found their email address and wrote them about the website. Hope it isn't gone forever, it is really a good idea. If they are gone, I will come up with a way to do it myself. I can sustain the garden, I would just need the "big hunky blokes" to get the area ready for planting :-D Frank, whether I can get the front yard changed into a vegie garden or flower garden, I was already planning to have a tall fence around the yard. We have too many kids in this neighborhood who have not been taught the difference between what they can and can not fiddle with.
Good idea Toni. They'll know it's not for the taking if there is a giant fence around it Seems like the hosting for the site above has ran out. This can happen if hosting bills are forgotten about, IMO it doesn't look rosy
