I was in the house and I saw a Monarch butterfly so I grabbed my camera and went outside. I got an extra surprise besides the butterfly...the hummingbird moth was on the butterfly bush too...

Oh my! I wondered what I saw flitting around last week in the yard......hummingbird moth...I didn't know there was such a beast!

It took me by surprise and was so fast I wasn't sure if it was a hornet or what.

    Very nice pictures Sherry.

You really did have a good day out. I adore those hummingbird moths. We've only seen them near the Mediterranean, and I'm enchanted by them. The other butterflies and bumble bee looks good too.

Okay, I'll be the one to sound dumb here. What is that in the last photo?

I love the hummingbird moths, but haven't seen any this year. Last year, my oldest son and I were "attacked" by one that thought our shirts looked yummy. Your pictures are so lovely and clear. Nice job.

One more question for you: So, how much bug repellant do you have to wear when you spend any time outdoors? I dread going outside to weed or dead-head. The mosquitoes almost carry me off.

yes.... that is some type of grasshopper but he is just a little bit of a thing...I just enjoy taking pictures...

I have been weeding and deadheading off and on all day. I do not use repellant, I can't stand the smell of it. I do get bit up from the mosquitoes but it has to be done. I always hope for a windy day but today was pretty calm...

Great photographs of the Hummingbird Hawkmoth Sherry and those beautiful butterflies. Love the shot of the bee and the grasshopper too.

Jackram - if you can get hold of some Citronella oil and dab a spot on your wrists, forehead and neck it will help to keep thos mossies away as they hate the smell of the stuff.

We have the sphinx moths (I think that's what they're commonly called) here too and they're really fun to watch. I've never been able to get a picture though, yours are great. Lots of Monarchs in my yard, too, as I leave all the native milkweed grow wherever it won't become a problem.

    Wonderful shots Sherry.
I wish I had better luck capturing nature with my camera. You always seem to get great shots. You must be very patient and sit very still. I can't seem to do either!

Netty...I am patient when it comes to photography...you can't expect to just get a great picture of something right away. Sometimes your lucky but I love to sit and relax and watch nature...Housework comes second in the spring and summer here but with just the two of us it really doesn't get too bad...I never really was into photography until the last 5 years or so and with time to do it now, I love it. I really have to go through all of my pictures and start deleting some of them on the computer...
