I came home today to find this. ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) "The Twins" relocated about 4-5 feet from their home.... plopped right on top of the Osteospermum. ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) "The Twins" were carved for me by two really good friends almost 25 years ago when I bought my house in New Mexico. They are supposed to keep evil spirits away. Maybe they are getting old.... 'cause something went horribly wrong last night or today! They are over 12 inches tall and about 6-8 inches in width. The wind couldn't have blown them. And even if Sassy Marie went running by them, she couldn't have knocked them over that far. I stood there mumbling "What the heck???" (ok... that's not the exact word I used but the last 2 letters are the same) Then I noticed this "mark" on them. ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) How did they get moved? What moved them? Why was nothing else disturbed.... no flowers nor blade of grass were out of place!! So, I put them back in place. Patted them on the head(s)... and walked away scratching my head still trying to figure it all out. ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden )
Is it raccoons Cherylad? It's fortunate that the damage was not to a more noticeable part of the face. I really like those carvings by the way. Have you posted them before?
Whatever moved your twins I don't think I'd like to meet it!! Something that can move an item that size must have either a VERY big mouth or gigantic paws!!
Maybe a passerby saw it and wanted it? Not sure if you have neighbors or a sidewalk nearby? Can't figure an animal would move it. Hope you figure this mystery out!
Obviously a herd of armadillos gently went under the fence, in between the bucket and "The twins", then panicked, stampeded and knocked "The twins" into the Osteospermum. The armadillos were wearing their slippers, hence no noise or tracks. They had gotten up to use the armadillo outhouse and were lost as there is no outhouse on your property with an 'A' on it. Elementary my dear Cheryl, as Homes would say. To prevent another occurrence, your hubby now needs to build an armadillo size outhouse away from the Osteospermum. Jerry
Droopy... that may be true since they have been in the same spot for the last two years.... but that doesn't explain "mark/gash" on that one side? Frank... we have all sorts of varmints around here.... from squirrels to foxes to bobcats and everything in between. But whatever this was had to be pretty good sized and good with their paws.... so maybe a BIG raccoon? If it were food... okay I can understand them wanting it. But a big chunk of wood??? And I thought I had posted a photo of the "twins" before, but I guess not. They are starting to rot from the bottom, so I keep putting all sorts of preservatives on them. Eileen.... I agree with you! Whatever it was picked it up and carried it... looks like with a paw. It was not rolled, otherwise it would have flattened the young Coneflowers growing there. Netty.... there are no passerbys. I live at the end of the road practically in the middle of no where. So a human is pretty much ruled out... again... especially with that "gash" that looks like a claw. Jerry... your scenario of the herd of armadillos cracked me up! I'll have to put that outhouse on Hubby's to do list! Since Gazing Balls are supposed to keep witches away... do you think I need one for this "spook"?
Has the 'Dragon' been wandering around your yard? But he wouldn't take a bite out of them though. 'tis a conundrum
