Wow. Those photos with the light behind, show just exactly how perfectly made these birds are. I can't stop looking and admiring. Absolutely beautiful, don't you think?
I agree Daisybeans, they are brutal hunters but they are so beautiful to watch fly. These Chicken Hawks come around often because we have lots of squirell nest in the area.
The other morning when I left for work there were 5 or 6 hawks flying around over my next door neighbor's house. It was unusual. I was mesmerized watching them soar and dip. Really beautiful and graceful. I don't know what they were looking for, didn't see anything out of the ordinary (except them!). Maybe now that the leaves have fallen off the trees, they can see the squirrel nests?
Are those Redtail Hawks? About a month ago I saw one snatch a squirrel right out of a tree. It was a full grown Fox Squirrel and he could barely fly with it.
Capt, these are Red Tail or chicken hawks, they will eat rabbits, squirrels, and even small dogs. There are more pics of them in my album (hawks).
Wonderful photos! Now that our field is shredded for the last time this year, we are seeing more hawks. They like to hunt for the mice and voles, but when the grasses are high, can't locate them. We have had hawks "kettle" just once. About 30 or 40 hawks make a circular cone in the sky, something like a DNA thread, and just keep going from top to bottom. I don't know why they do it, but it is a sight to behold! I hope your photo of a hawk is considered for the next photo of the month. It certainly merits consideration!
Great photos,We have lots of them around. We had 12 kittens just old enough to roll and play around They belonged to 3 different mother cats.and little by little late evenings they vanished.I think a hawk ,owl or snake got them.
Nice foto's, mate! That is a nice specimen...and with the blue sky as a background, their colours really stand out well. That behaviour that you described sounds very interesting from a scientific point of view. It sounds very curious indeed. Do you recall what type of hawks did that and in which month?
