Today I got a Raspberry Frills lavender and a Provence lavender. They're small, in 4 inch pots. Is a very sunny location good for them, with afternoon shade? There's a place near our bedroom window, and I thought it would be nice there, they have a strong scent already and are still quite small.

Lavender is wonderful isn't it? The fragrance is incredible.
My lavender plants like the more sunny hot spots in my yard. They don't get shade till well after 5pm. They also don't mind it a bit on the drier side.

I love lavender, I bought a 5th one not long ago.

They love all the sun they can get. Put them somewhere where you will not be tempted to water them everyday or everytime you have the sprinkler going as they need to be drier than most plants. Also, do not squish them close together and put them on the outer edge of a bed, they need the air flowing thru them or they will rot from moisture.

As Toni said plant your lavender on the outer edges of your flower beds. I do this but not just to let the air flow through them. As you brush against themwhilst walking past their perfume is delighful. :-D
