Ive updated my bird list ^_^ So our backyard bird visitors list is: American Robin Cardinal Mourning Dove Grackle Brown-Headed Cowbird Starling White-Breasted Nuthatch Dark-Eyed Junco Downy Woodpecker House Finch Chipping Sparrow House Sparrow Swainsons Thrush Goldfinch Yellow-Billed Cuckoo Blue Jay As I ID more birds, Ill add em here ^_^
WOW!! That's a wonderful list of birds visiting your yard, Bip. Say, I just saw an interesting tip about how to hang suet feeders so that only the "desirable" birdies will be able to enjoy it. If this is the type of feeder you use and you buy the prepared suet that comes in a sort of a square plastic tub, don't remove the block of suet from that tub before sliding it into the feeder cage. Then hang the entire assembly "face down" instead of vertically (in other words, with the open part of the suet facing the ground). You may have to add a couple of pieces of chain or wire to hang it that way, but only woodpeckers and smaller birds like finches and chickadees will be able to feed comfortably hanging upside down like that. :-D Or at least, that's what the man on TV said, it sounded reasonable to me.
I have those feeders in my garden Zuzu but the starlings and rooks still manage to get at the suet or pull the feeders off the hooks and burst them open no matter which way I hang them up. GRRRR You certainly have a lovely assortment of birds visiting your garden Jen. I look forward to seeing the new additions as you add them to your list. :-D
Good group coming to visit.Bird here in Heathers yard are so pretty but are to fast for me to capture on film.
My suet feeder is similar, though it hangs from a chain. I think Ill try hanging it upside down like that. I took it down a few days ago, hoping that they would give up, though I still see em.
Good luck, Bip. Let's hope that your Grackles aren't as clever as Eileen's Rooks and Starlings. It seems like every year the Blackbirds devour our suet, so that's why the tip caught my attention, I plan to try it this year, too.
I've always hung my suet the way Zuzu mentioned, it's worked well for years, but now my resident grey squirrel has discovered that by hanging from one toe & his tail, he can get into it! Looks so funny I don't really mind. Bip, sounds like you have alot of the same visitors I do, except for the cardinals Hmm, maybe I should attach notes to the little birdie legs and see if the wind up at your place, lol! (hmm, my fever must be returning, I suddenly have a vision of two sparrows carrying a coconut between them, Monty Python always crops up in fever dreams!)
