As most pet owners do we spoiled Rambo rotten. Randy even made him a fountain to drink from.
The story behind that being a few years ago Lisa gave me a fountain for the front porch made from a pail, the spout looks like a flower and there are rocks for the water to run thru. We got it hooked up and left it sitting on the livingroom floor for a few days to enjoy while I figured out where I wanted it on the porch.
Each morning we would find it almost dry, no holes in the pail or spills on the floor but the water was disappearing.
One day we heard a slurping sound and found Rambo drinking from the falling water. He refused to drink from his still water bowl again so Randy had to make him a fountain of his own.

So now I have a blue spattered enamel stew pot that I want to put a 'dog' related plant in as a memorial. Something with dog in the name, the only one that comes to my mind is dog bane but I don't think that sounds very appropriate.

    Any other ideas?

Is it a big enough pail to keep a trimmed dogwood tree in?

Did Rambo have a favorite plant to nibble on? My Shepherd "Shadow" always ate my Lungwort plant. The poor plant struggled and never had a bloom. Shadow's been gone for 3 years now but everytime I see Lungwort now I think of her.

Thanks all, it looks like all the 'dog' plants are large ones so I am thinking maybe a special little garden area out front with all of them I can find.

Playtime, I looked up Dog Rose, it is really pretty and has been introduced here but I can't find a supplier for it. Might have to see if Caloways can special order one. Thanks for the idea, I had never heard of it before.

Sjoerd, I won't be using the pot in the garden afterall. Amanda asked if we could make into a regular indoor fountain in the kitchen. I think we will because the silence without it after all these years is something we are just not ready for. I have a red-twigged Dogwood on my 'to buy' list for fall, hadn't remembered that until you mentioned it. Thanks for the memory spark

Netty, funny you should ask about favorite nibble plants....Rambo did have a fondness for Coreopsis. We found him outside with his head buried in it munching away many times. I have several that will be transferred to the front yard so one will definitely go in his garden area.

Terry, that Wet Dog plant is gorgeous. There is a large empty area in front of Amanda's bedroom window that would hold one nicely. Since it's fruit is poisonous it would have to be near the house to keep the neighborhood rugrats from picking them. It is protected in Florida and only licensed nurseries can sell them, I will have to find out if they will sell out of state. I love the smell of Anise, thanks for the idea.

I wish the Marshmallow plant would grow here. Marshmallows were his all time favorite treat and the only way we could get pills down him for years....stick it inside a large marshmallow and he would gulp it right down. We had to just use the letter "M" when referring to them, he knew the word and would pestered us to get him some.

Sorry Toni, I didn't read it all the way through and had no idea it was poisonous. Yikes!

    I love the marshmallow story.

Is this what you mean by the "dog rose". Its called Steinnype here. Its where i get my rosehips from at the end of the season. That would be really pretty to plant one. So simple but beautiful. They can get really big tho.
