I will be moving into my childhood home shortly. I've been waiting on Fall and the cooler weather to move because I don't want to put too much stress on the plants. They are and have always been in containers, so no stress will be caused to them from digging them up. I plan on planting a few of them soon but the others will be put inside for the winter and planted in the spring. Not only did I have to wait on cooler weather to move, I had to wait for hubby to build a fence separating what will be my section of the yard from the rest. I've told my brother (who will be sharing the house with us) that by no means is he allowed to mow or do any work in my area. (He's known for just mowing everything down.) So after watching the sun/shade patterns for months, I finally picked out the spot I wanted. And over the weekend, we got the fence put up. I told hubby that I wanted the best looking "ugly" fence ever. fence-facing house ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) This is facing East towards the back of the house. What used to be the garage is now my storage space/gardening shed. (Another place my brother isn't allowed to mess with!) fence-south ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) Sort of same view, but to the right (south) you can see that open field. I can spread out towards there as far as I want. I'm going to try to stop at the edge of the old garage. Note: I said "TRY". :-D And this is the view facing West out to the pasture.. where my brother can mow all he wants! fence to pasture ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) And finally, the view facing North. That building is my brother's storage/work shed. And beyond that is more pasture and where my brother keeps the tractor and stuff. Can't see it in this photo, but my dad's big ol' BBQ pit is over there and a patio area for BBQs. I'm sure eventually I'll add some plants over to that area but they won't be in the "safety zone"... so extra care and planning will have to go into it. Probably some stuff in big containers. fence - facing north ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) So Stewbies... get prepared to be bombarded with posts from me... the move is on!
Oh joy, oh joy, an empty pallette upon which to paint yourself a garden! :-D I can hardly wait to see photos. Please keep us updated on progress, both with posts and pictures. The place looks lovely now with those big trees and that gorgeous fence (tell your hubby I said so!). Just imagining what you can do with it . . . . I bet Toni will have a suggestion if you ask her nicely!
Oh wow...I'd love to be able to start from scratch! I can't wait to see what you do with your space Cherylad!
Gosh how exciting!! Now that the fabulous fence is in place you'll be able to play in the garden to your hearts content!! I look forward to seeing your space as it takes shape and fills up.
Congrats Cheryl--it looks a good one. I shall keep my eye out for further postings of your coming garden.
Congratulations to you. I would love a bit of your space and I'm looking forward to the bombardment. You're moving to a lovely place, and I like your fence.
Thanks everyone. I'm so excited about the move (if you couldn't tell!) I'll tell Hubby that everyone likes the fence. He wanted to measure everything and get everything all perfect, even, lined up. I said "NO!" He's wanting to add some poles going cross-ways through each section (did I explain that right?). I'm not sure about that yet... but it might look okay. Plus it might help with any vines that I put there. What do you all think?
I think the addition poles going corner to corner would be good. It would give vines something to climb on and if you wanted to heavy growers like Grapes, Trumpet Vine, Honeysuckle or Moon Flower then it would make the fence panels sturdier to support them.
Hubby put up the "cross poles" on the fence. It's now complete! And I even planted the first plant. fence - finished ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden )
Wow, that's even better looking than it was before and before it was great. What did you plant at the corner?
Yes... I think I like it more now too. I swear, Hubby has some good ideas sometimes! :-D I planted a Red Leaf Hibiscus. This one was still in a container and it kept falling over. So it was the first to make the move to the house. I posted last week about the plant trying to narrow down it's variety. Here's the one that's been planted since spring. http://www.gardenstew.com/viewtopic.php ... f+hibiscus
Cheryl, I LOVE that fence! Your husband has a designing eye, and you have a gardening eye. Together you see possibilities! I'm going to steal your fence idea to use around our asparagus patch. The fronds keep falling over and make mowing difficult. I'll use cedar poles that we have on hand, and it won't look nearly as fine as your fence. Can hardly wait to see what else you plant at your new/old home!
I really wanted to find some rough-cut cedar poles... but there was none to be found nearby. So I went with these "regular ol' poles" from the farm supply place in town. It's just a little-bitty town, so I try to shop local when possible.
Ohhh! Very, very nice fence indeed. It's almost a shame to cover it up with climbers, but I know I wouldn't hesitate. Good job, both of you.
