I found a package of three of these 'garden socks' at the thrift store and filled one of them with strawberry plants today.

Has anyone tried growing in these things?

No. I felt sorry for the strawberry plants and didn't try. I forget to water containers you see. Inside and out. It's a wonder anything still lives indoors, and I'm not submitting strawberries to my lack of care.

I tried something similar once Toni. However, the plastic wasn't strong enough for the weight of the plants when they matured and gave way. Hopefully yours won't do the same. Your garden sock looks a lot stronger than the pouches I bought.

I grew Impatiens in one of those socks one year. They filled in and looked nice but I found them very hard to water. They also dried out quickly.

We did impatiens one year too and they were very pretty. I dont' recall doing anything in particular to water them. I wonder how the berries will do?

I have one that was given to me that I plan to try later on. I don't know how strong it is gonna be but worth a shot since it was free. I will likely put some flowers in though instead of a heavy fruit bearer since it seems to be rather week.

I have not seen a garden sock befor. Kind of cool. But i bet you probably have to water it a few times a day there.

I also planted strawberrys today, only mine are in hanging containers and a container that sits on the outdoor table. No more ground planting for me if i can help it....lol.

I have seen those sock planters advertised in magazines and they always make them look fab. I agree that watering might be a pain...something inventive would have to be used to aid getting water in, but if it works, then what a great thing for your strawbs. Up high away from the pests, and mouth height so minimum travelling distance from plant to tongue. :)

Not sure I will be watering every day. They are made out of a non-porous material so there should be very little evaporation from it.
It feels like a Tyvek type material, like the U.S. post office uses for priority envelopes and it is used as a vapor shield on the outer walls in new home construction.

But time will tell. There are two blossoms and hopefully at least two berries will appear.
