There has been some torrential rain where I live in Nashville, Tennessee. Figures of 4 - 6 inches have been recorded. Our house backs up to the Harpeth River, one of the main waterways here, which swelled so much it overran its banks and we could catch glimpses of it through the trees in our back yard. Parts of our subdivision were underwater during the flood of 2010, but our house escaped.....we weren't living here then, we just moved before Christmas, but were diligent about checking out all of the houses we were looking at to see if they were flood houses. About a half mile from our house, on the way to the subdivision, is a large area composed of several soccer fields, parking area, walking trails, canoe launch, and picnic grounds. This is what it looked like after the rain. One of the several soccer fields. The parking lot is to the left of the fence, and more fields to the right. The green you can see beyond the water was completely covered yesterday.
Water soccer anyone? Okay... I know it's a serious issue when flooding occurs. I've seen my share. And it's a scarey thing just watching the waters rise and rise. Hope this all recedes pretty quickly and the fields weren't damaged too badly.
Well those playing fields won't be getting used for a while - unless anyone wants to play water polo. As Ronni says I hope all that water recedes quickly and that the damage caused by it is minimal. Thank goodness it didn't reach your home.
Ok living near the water and seeing your second pic of the parking lot reminds me of boat ramps here on the intercoastal.... living in Florida flooding is always an issue, I live in Vero Beach and thankfully my community is on the highland part. When I lived in Hollywood in 1999 we had tropical storm something or other and I was waiting tables then(teenager) and we had a lake next to the restaurant and it flooded so bad into our parking lot that people couldn't see the barrier and drove into the lake. My boss at the time saved a family out of there car as it was sinking.... that's what your pics reminded me of. Be safe
It always happen here too in our country's capital even though we have state of the art flood control, the SMART TUNNEL. The tunnel is smart but the people doing it is not and that's why we still get lots of flash flood in the city!!!
I am so thankful that we live on a very high hill. I feel for anyone having to go threw a flood and deal with all the aftermath of clean up or rebuilding.
Been flooded before.Never any in main part of house.Have helped people gut their nice homes in Cedar Rapids..This was in 08. 20 feet over flood stage.Pictures of people climbing out windows-2nd story.
I am sorry you all are getting flooded out down there. We had that awful drought last summer, so it is hard to think of "too much rain". I live on a hilltop, so it would take a horrible amount of rain to flood us out. However, we are very soggy here at the moment. I have to change my socks every time I go outdoors.
Well, the sad thing here is that after close to a week, the area dried out enough that they were able to prep it for more soccer. So they righted what had gotten tipped over (including the chemical toilets...eeeewww!) mowed the grass, re-drew the lines of the various fields. And then they didn't even have time to hold ONE game there before there was more rain! This entire weekend has been nothing but, and there's a higher than 40% chance of rain every day through the end of next weekend. When I drove past the soccer field on Saturday, it had been lightly raining for about 36 hours by then. and while it wasn't flooded, there were puddles everywhere making it not possible to play on the field. At this time of the year it's typically packed all weekend long, with nightly activity during the week. So sad.
We have had this same rain system here in Knoxville. No flooding in my neighborhood but the ground is saturated. I have lots of flowers to plant and its too wet and rainy to put them in the ground.
Yes, same here! That's the other part of all this that is so frustrating! I hardly got any gardening done last weekend because of rain, and was prevented again this weekend from doing much because I was again rained out! And it's supposed to rain through the weekend NEXT weekend! Grrrr!
Ronni, I am thinking we might be needing some, too. Could you split it between Cheryl and us up here. It hasn't rained in a couple weeks now and stuff is starting to get dry. It is hard to weed the outside strawberries that soil is starting to cling tight to the roots.
