It has been freezing and snowing for days on here now. The conditions are so bad that I haven't been to the lotties for a little more than a week now. I am hoping that the thick pack of snow is adequately covering everything there, especially the winter veg. I'd hate to loose the leeks and the purple sprouting broccoli. Well, the lottie isn't the only thing that is suffering--the streets and roads here as well, along with bus service, train service and the airport to some extent. The street guys have run out of sand and salt now. No one had guessed that these conditions would persist so long, I suppose. Here is the street alongside "our street". This street runs perpendicular to "our street". Our street looking southward (I'm standing in the intersection). ....and here is "our street" looking in the other direction (northwards). These pics were taken a few days ago and it's worse (or better, depending on one's idea of good and bad) now. I could go out and take a new set, but I ain't gonna. I am well and truly ready for this snow and ice to melt away now. You can have too much of a good thing, you know. The harbour (inner and outer) have been frozen solid now for awhile and yesterday, a fireboat was used to break the ice to open the harbour again. You can see our harbour tower there in the distance. I hope that you folks are not having too much trouble with snow and ice in your hometowns. I wish that there was something that I could do about all this stuff. Like Eileen said, "Even weeding seems like a dream scenario at present". Perhaps if I go and have another look at the seed catalogues.....
Oh dear Sjoerd you're having the same type of weather us us!! I miss seeing greenery and would love to get rid of all this white stuff.
beautiful pics sjoerd! love the one of the boat and harbor. really something! we are in the deep freeze at the moment. got a few inches of snow more the other day, and more coming in this weekend. still, we are used to all this. keep warm, you and yours!
We have about 5 inches of snow on the ground and temps. near 0 F or lower this weekend. But the good news is mid-week of next week we are to be in the mid to high 30's with bright sun. Let the melting begin!
Your photos are lovely Sjoerd ... I really love that 3rd photo of the snow filled trees. I guess this weather isn't normal for you there ?
Oh, and I'm complaining about the cold. We don't have snow but Chance's outside water dish is frozen this morning. It will get up to near 40 today but I guess it all depends on what you think of as cold. I'm cold. I can still see the ground though. There are no flowers but my herbs are still there and not frozen or frosted to death. I'll be quiet about being cold now. It's not cold here. dooley
Those are lovely photos, Sjoerd. But I can understand why you don't want to take updated ones...as Big Bird said in 'Christmas Eve on Sesame Street'..."I think my giblets are frozen" There are several cities in the north and northeastern U.S. that have run out of money to buy sand for streets, they underestimated how long this most recent weather event would last. Some don't know how they will handle any more snow and ice they get before winter is over.
I think your town looks lovely with the snow and ice. I won't comment on the amount. *points at the photos in my blog*
Your photos look beautiful but I know it is frustrating when it disrupts your routine. We only had an inch or so yesterday but it melted & then froze and the streets iced up. Took my husband 2 hours to get home, he had to park at the pool house and walk 1 l/2 miles home.
Looks very familiar Sjoerd. Thick snow has been persisting here in the UK with more forecast for us in East Anglia over night, at least another couple of inches. It is about 6 inches deep now in our garden and the roads are pretty bad. Mark manages to get out and about but he drives a 4 wheel drive which is just about able to cope. The kids school shut early on Wednesday and has been closed ever since. I have put so much bird feed and fat balls in the garden it is crazy, but the blackbirds, starlings, sparrows and pigeons have been coming to the garden like never before. On the one hand, the big kid in me loves it, and I love that photo of your harbour Sjoerd, but on the other hand, I can't work, the allotment really could do with some TLC and I am starting to get a little stir crazy stuck at home in the snow.
When you are not used to it, snow and ice are really a pain... Then again, when you are used to it, snow and ice are really a pain... :-| And cold wintery temperatures are ... really a pain. We had 2-3 inches last night and schools were two hours delayed -- can you believe it? We are unsettled by the cold temps... I heard that Baltimore City (nearest big city) used up its entire snow removal budget on the blizzard we had just before Christmas and we are just heading into our "snow" season (late Jan and Feb) so we'll see what happens next. Our creeks are still flowing -- the water is brackish and usually takes a while to freeze but it does sometimes. Take heart -- Spring WILL come again... it always does.
Thanks for your words, EILEEN...(and sympathy) All this snow is like the old days". We haven't seen such as this for many, many years here. As bad as the weather is, it's still not cold enough to hold an Elfstededtocht--you need -11°C for a string of days for the ice to be thick enough. Ha,ha BUNKIE-- I recall seeing pictures that you have shown (your old avatar for instance) of the kind of snow you get there. We never get that much here these days. I'm glad that you liked the fotos. They have decised to keep that corridor of open ice open in the harbour, so the ice-breakers will be making regular trips now. I'm with you, CAPT--Let the melting begin! No NETTY--the weather is not normal for us here anymore. It was once like that regularly, but hasn't been for many, many years now. We have become spoiled by milder winters lately and so now afyer a few days, it all becomes more annoying than pleasant. hahaha Oh my, DOOLEY--How nice it would be to see the green grass that's lying under the snow and ice. I know what Big Bird ment, TONI--no one wants their giblets damaged. Life without giblets is no life at all is it? I think that all this bad weather caught a lot of folks by surprize in many countries. Thanks for liking the fotos, DROOPY--as for the "amount" wise-crack--well, you're just a big show-off, that's what you are. GFREIHERR--What a story about your man having to walk so far to get home. That is amazing. Yeah EJ-- It must look very familiar...I reckon it's the same cloud. Well, things here have not come to a halt in the way that it has there, I don't ever recall the schools being closed here for instance. The birds really need extra food now, because so much is covered-up and I guess that the snow is just too deep for those little guys to dig down into. I'll bet you are getting a bit stir-crazy having to be inside so much--that isn't like you at all, you energetic person, you! Here's wishing you strength. You are correct DAISY--the weather is a pain...a BIG pain. hahaha. Now we have a very strong wind that has come up. That will make beiong outside even less pleasant, I'm afraid...and I have a couple of appointments this afternoon and evening.....BURRRRRRR.
It does look pretty out there, though. Hang in there Sjoerd! We've got another 2+ months to deal with here. Glad I took up quilting now to get me through those long, cold winter months...
Thanks Kaçey. know you guys will have alot omre for alot longer...but if I'm out in this stuff, it just FEELS like it will last forever. I'm glad that you took up quilting too. I quite enjoy seeing the result of your endeavours. I like the appearance of quilts; it's just amazing what all people can make when they set their mind to it.
Your photos are beautiful...postcard like. I really like the harbor photo...liked it in the all the previous photos as well.
