I was at one my Aunts today to "rescue" some dessert from her Easter gathering. We were discussing the climbing small roses we have at home, because she has several "clumps" of them too and I've been trying to learn more about them. Her daughter said "Oh you mean those Seven Sister Roses?" I thought she just said it because there was 7 girls in my mom's family. She said that's what she's always heard them called by her other aunts/uncles/grandparents, etc plus most of the flowers are in groups of seven. My aunt (who is almost 94) said... "oh yeah... that's what they're called". I know that so many plants are called by so many different things in different regions. Just curious if anyone else has heard of the "Seven Sisters"? climbing roses ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden )
Here's a website Cheryl that let's you see the Seven Sisters Rose. http://www.rose-gardening-made-easy.com ... -rose.html It certainly looks just like the one in your photograph. I think you've got your ID!! So glad you went to rescue those desserts.
Cheryl, does this mean we now call you Sherlock? Good for you, finding out they are 7 Sisters! A wonderful rose, as you well know.
Wow... I never thought it was a REAL variety name! Thanks for the link Eileen... that's definitely it. It's funny that it said it could be an "arching bush" because it has started to climb over the fence to the archway! I think I'll let grow there for now. I do have trumpet vines planted for the archway... maybe they'll be able to co-exist?
I have heard of this rose. Friends talk about how lovely it is, and I have seen it in cataglogs, but did not think to recall which ones. It is a climber? If so, I want to get it.
Yes Nightowl... definitely a climber. As of today, all the blooms have died off. Sure wish they lasted longer. But oh well... happy to have them still around after all these years.
I was just looking at Antique Rose Emporium and they have this bush. According to them, it is not a repeat bloomer though. Otherwise, I like it a lot. They do have excellent roses there. My one UFO bush--I didnt keep the tag with its name--is full of buds about to open today, and it is huge. This one is from Wally's.
