Im' done wood gathering! I fimished splitting the last of it today. It took me from 8:30 this morning untill 3 this afternoon to get the last of it split and stacked under cover. All I have to do now is put stuff away and put the snow blower on the one tractor and I will be set for winter!
Huzzah, Captain! ours is all snugly tucked away under a tarp, but since the all-knowing meteorologists say it's going to just be a rainy winter, no ice storms and such, I can't see us going through it too fast. Which is good, in a small house, that woodstove dust and bits can get pretty aggrivating to the cleaning lady (meaning Me!!!) So what sort of wood do you burn in Ohio? I have amix of fir, alder and maple this year. Just curious
Glad your wood pile is stacked high. I hope it's a warm winter and you don't need to use it all. We heat with propane and I don't look forward to the expense so I really would like a mild winter.
Critter, I burn whatever is dead ! Mostly elm that has died from the Dutch elm disease. I also burn Honey Locust and Black Locust. But usually I look for standing dead wood. I don't cut any green wood except Locust. The Honey Locust limbs snap off fairly easily in a windy storm, so I usually have some large limbs or even whole trees of those to use. The wood peckers love to drill their nest holes in them and then a high wind comes along and snaps them off right at the hole.
It's a lot of work, but it sure feels nice along about mid - Jan! Yeah there is some dust, but I figure my winter heating bill is about $100 per season. That's gas and oil for the tractor and splitter and chain saw. The wood is free. I do use electric space heaters up until Jan, as it usually not too cold until then. Some times I have to use the wood sooner.
I'm trying to get my garage cleaned out for winter so I can get two cars in it. I hate scraping the windows in the morning. I'm glad someone is prepared for winter.
We have an all electric home so we hope the power doesn't go out. We have no alternative heat source. I'm glad you all are ready for the cold early. Wannabe
