I am wondering if anyone has tried this and how they did it. I have been thinking about this for a while and I think I have come up with something that might work and not be so hard to use.

A piece of 2 inch PVC, cut in half
2 end caps with a slit cut in them to fit the branch of the plant to propagate.
some rubber tape to secure the pvc and lids to the plant
potting soil, shangum moss or other sterile medium. I was thinking Coconut coir could work well for this but it tends to lose moisture very quickly. Wuld really need to make sure you get the tubes taped on well to prevent drying out.

the only problems I find is the PVC is that it's white and it won't be possible to see if there are any roots yet. A clear pipe might work better but might need to put some aluminum foil over it to reflect heat and keep the whole thing cool.

Anyone have any other suggestions for aerial layering?

Wound (girdle) your branch to permit application of rootone. Moisten some peat cup it in a peice of saran wrap wrap moistened peat over your wounded branch, Tie all in place with twine, overlay wrap with aluminum foil. Tie it on if you feel it needs it too.

My best luck with airlayering has come after leaves have just started to erupt. I make a bit of cup with top of foil so I can add water. Check for callus late in September.

A heaping handful of soggy peat onna long strip of saran wrap can be aided by a second set of hands...
