The rain finally quit so I decided to head out to the veggie garden. I discovered that potatoes do not like a lot of water. Half of my potato crop was gone...rotten. I salvaged what I could. Here's what I picked today: The beans are slowing down now. I picked a whole bucket the other day. My 5 year old planted the purple beans and we did a taste test and decided that we liked the taste of them better than the green beans. They turn green when they are cooked. The Zucchini are undisturbed by the amount of rain. I picked 5 today and there are plenty more that will be ready to pick in the next day or 2. Hope all my neighbors like Zucchini! This is the first time I planted Turnips. I'm really not sure what to do with them! This Kale and Red Cabbage will be eaten for Christmas dinner. The green peppers are almost ready to pick Waiting patiently for the tomato's to turn red. We did pick a handful of "Tiny Tim" tomato's today but they didn't make it to the house Sweet Millions Celebrity This popped up in the Mesclun Mix. Is it Swiss Chard? And what do I do with it? My son is keeping his eye on this pumpkin for some pumpkin pie.
Your vegies look so good. Love zuchinis, potatoes and beans. Years ago when I had a garden, my FIL planted it for us... he planted turnips amongst many other vegies! I cleaned the greens and fixed them for my DH, (they were good) but we didn't like the turnips. Those all went to one of his co-workers!
Lovely crop, Netty. Your red cabbage looks like a piece of art, and I feel I'm very excited about that pumpkin of yours. I find it hard to understand that you can grow tomatoes, pumpkins and Zucchini outside while I can't. It's a strange, little world.
wonderful harvest netty! that does look like swiss chard to me. you can steam it like spinach or saute it.
Fantastic harvest Netty! Looking absolutely bountiful. That does indeed look like Swiss chard to me. You cook it like spinach (with or without bread crums or with or without a creamy sauce). I often stir fry it with other veg and ground beef. I really like that veg. I also freeze it in for eating during the winter. Well done!
What an impressive harvest...lucky that you have potatoes..all mine are gone I have used swiss chard in soups...pull out the middle "vein" and either slice thinly or chop and add to soup, stew right in the end of the cooking. Doesn't need that long to cook. You can also saute it with onions and garlic in a little oil, season with salt and pepper.
Your veggies look mouth watering good. My Mom would make a beef stew and use the turnip bottoms in place of potatoes, yum good.
wow what a great harvest. I'm still waiting on my peppers to appear. no small toms for us just large ones this year. You've done good.
I'm envious, everything looks wonderful. I like chard sauteed and turnips are good for soups and in mashed potatoes. Your veggies look delicious!
That looks like a great harvest so far!! I sure miss pumpkins. What i would do for a fresh one to make pies and baked goods out of it. I was to suggest with the turnips to add to the mashed potatoes and add some garlic but i got beat to it. lol. the leaves are great for making greens out of...ask a southerner for a great recipe,, they all know the best ones,, i mix my broccoli leaves with the turnip leaves for greens. Here in Norway you can't buy turnip greens,,, its unheard of to eat them.. they come all chopped off. Thats why i grow my own,,lol. Lucky you!!
Netty, what I want to ask is, how do you prune the plants and when? You seem to have tons of fruit and no foliage. Clue me in before next season.
I wish I had a secret to share with you Growingpains, but I didn't prune a single thing! I did have a Tomato Hornworm for a few days...
No pumpkins in Norway? Oh my. :'( Is this because of the DTM or another reason, like mildew problems?
