Hi All: The morning dove who I had reported on several times with the injured leg is learning to use it quite well. His foot does not open so he can't walk on the flat of it. But he does walk on the foot by walking on the tips of his toes. He still has a limp but is getting around really good. Thought I'd just share his progress with everyone.

I've been wondering how your dove was doing Tooty. I was getting a bit worried thinking he might have fallen prey to some preditor. I'm really pleased to see that he is using the injured foot and is still fit and healthy in every other way. I still think though, that if you hadn't given him an initial helping hand, he might not have made it through until today. Well done!!

Eileen thanks your concern. Yes he is doing great now. I just wonder what happened to his leg? He even uses it to scratch his head on that side. But he has no control over his toes. Oh well. Glad he is doing so good also. :stew1:

Thanks for the update Tooty. He looks healthy. A silly question perhaps but why hasn't he flown away yet? Is it all the good care he is getting at your place? :)

Glad to hear that the dove is learning to adjust to the injury. Sounds like a sprained tendon. Thanks for the update.

Sjoeerd and Frank: yup he sure does look good. Our doves stay year round here in Wis. He isn't to afraid of me at all. I had opened the patio door and took that shot. He just gave me that funny little sideways look.

Jerry I never thought of a tendon injury. That could very well be as he has slowly been getting the use of his leg back. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks :stew1:

When a bird lands on a branch, to keep from falling off, a tendon on the back of its leg tightens and the toes lock. The toes will remain locked until the bird straightens its leg, the reason birds don't fall off a branch while sleeping. As the tendon heals the bird will resume its activities in a normal manner.

Jerry thanks again for the positive info. It does seem to be having more and more use of it's leg and foot. So glad it wasn't something more damaging. :stew1:
