I know that this is called Wildlife in the Garden but today it intruded into the house. I was sitting at the dining room table and Chance was laying on the floor a bit away when she started growling a low growl. She moved and was looking under the cupboard by the bedroom door. I went to see what she was growling. Imagine my surprise when I saw it was a snake. It wasn't too big so I put Chance outside and called dr. We tried to catch it with a pair of tongs but they kept slipping. It crawled behind the wood box and I called Dan. The library is about a mile from here. He came over and reached down and caught it. It was a little (2 ft) California King Snake. I knew it was a king snake before I tried to catch it. I wouldn't have caught it with my hand though. He took it away. He's going to put it in an aquarium at the library for a couple of days and he will release it in the hills around the town. It was beautiful. Wish I had remembered that I had a camera. Since he's going to keep it a couple of days I will go and see if I can get a picture of it. King Snakes are not poisonous and they will kill a rattlesnake for lunch. If not for Chance we could have put it back in the yard. I was just afraid she'd kill it if it came back again and we weren't home. I know where there is one there can be more but this one will not be back here. dooley

King snakes are not harmed here in NC. They attack the poisonous varieties which are abundant here.

I'd love to see a snake in the yard, but not inside the house! Good puppy Chance!

I love snakes - I know, I know I'm a strange one!! I've never been afraid of reptiles and would have enjoyed seeing your King snake Dooley. It's good to know that Chance was on the alert and that it's now going to find a new home.

I would of freaked...I had two grass snakes in the house when we lived at the last house..the first one the cat tired out and was just laying there in the middle of the floor so I picked it up with the fire pit pitch fork and put it back outside..I did have to clean the pitch fork black marks off of the carpet. The second one I just covered with a pail until my husband came home to put it out. Some days I would see as many as 7 snakes in the flower beds and grass. Grass snakes and pine snakes...none harmful, just long..I screamed every time I found one looking at me when I was kneeling to do my flower gardening. I do not miss them at all, I have not seen a snake in the yard since we moved and I love it...it took me a long time to quit looking under the covers before I got into bed...

King snakes eat bugs, mice, lizards and other snakes, especially rattlesnakes. I don't know anyone who would kill one. This one was only 22 inches long and not too big around. When we went to the library on Friday Dan had it coiled in the palm of his hand and some kids were petting it. He said it coils up like that when it's scared. It's one beautiful snake. I wasn't scared because I saw the black and white and knew immediately what kind it was. I just couldn't catch it. Even non poisonous snakes can bite when scared or cornered. dooley
