I like the Syringa vulgaris a lot. We've got two. They're out in the corners, growing and blooming without any care. They get fertilized with the lawn and I remove dead branches and twigs in the spring. Then when they bloom, I cut some blooms where I want to trim the bush a bit, and bring inside. I love the scent. It likes a lot of sun here, but will probably prosper with a bit of shade as well on more southern latitudes.
