I went to hang a bird feeder on my pine tree today. I was going to use a copper nail to avoid rust. My neighbor told me that a copper nail could kill the tree. Is this possible? TIA :?:
I vaguely remember someone telling me the same thing years ago Richie. I presume the copper could leech arsenic through to the sap of the tree. A small tree may be overwhelmed by the poison and die but larger ones will probably survive.
Did someone say not long ago that copper nails kills a certain vine that grows out of control in gardens, If I can remember the name of the plant I will find the link, so I would have thought if it was an immature tree it would not be the best idea but as Eileen says an older tree would probably be strong enough to deal with it.
Yes playtime, that was brought up in a Wisteria discussion here: http://www.gardenstew.com/about12837.html
The copper nails haven't killed the Wisteria or stunted its growth in any way I can tell. It is still growing. Glenda, I got the Roundup concentrate, but am waiting for my yard man to drill a hole in the stump. I thought that might do better. Didn't want to waist an ounce of the concentrate at $23.00 a bottle!!!
It is really expensive.I do hope it works for you I hve been told brush and shrub killer might work.I know our Feed and seed store carries it.
I feel almost guilty. Today my neighbor said she wanted a wisteria so I gave her one... I told her she needs to find the right spot and the right support, told her it can kill anything it wraps around (keep the dogs inside...), showed her where one of mine has about taken the shutter off the house... they can be so pretty and so awful. Last year I cut the main branch of one that had gone up a pine tree. It was about 4 inches in diam. Stopped it in the tree but now it's a CONSTANT battle to keep it from taking over again. I have never found anything that even touches it. NOthing. So if you find something that works, I will be thankful, too.
