I have heard I can purchase garlic from the grocery store, separate the cloves and plant them whole. Is this true? When should I plant them?

I probably could have looked this up somewhere online, but I trust the advice of this forum than what I can find most other places. I thought you guys might have some real advice for me, especially since I may be growing them in red clay.

Garlic has been a popular topic off and on lately.
In red clay you would need to add compost or plant them in raised beds
