i thought this was a cedar. then i found a berry under it and thought it was a juniper. then saw a dream where it was a juniper. my family is convinced the berries are just flying in from my neighbors tree. "that's impossible" they say. anyway, can anybody help settle this matter? XD
it's trunk has narrow vertical strips that seem to be peeling. scale like leaves. see pictures.

I don't know much about the different varieties... but the leaves sure looks like a cedar shrub my folks used to have... long time ago.

it looks like juniper sp. to me. I noticed that when we had it in the flower shop, that when we used it, the stem was very rough, almost as if it had scales on it and if your fingers slid down the stem when you were cutting it, it would jab you, sometimes drawing blood.

It certainly looks like a juniper to me too. The berries and the foliage in your photographs look just right for it being a Juniperus communis.

Juniper will be prickly where as cedar is a much "softer" or smoother feeling foliage and bark. cedar also has cones not berries.
