I bought what I think is a Silver Saw Palmetto plant in South Carolina this summer. I brought it back up here to New York State and l left it outside this summer. It is now indoors. There is a grassy-like material that is growing around what looks like the palm plant that is getting so bushy, I'm afraid it's strangling the plant. But I'm not sure if this is actually an invader, or part of the plant itself that is budding. I've never seen anything like it up here in NYS but maybe it's something native to SC. The grassy strands split into 3 stands at the top with a fuzzy thing in the middle. Should I pull these out or is it part of the plant?

My guess is that's it's grass and should be removed. But... it's just a guess. I'm sure someone will come along soon and give you a definitive answer.

Yes. I was told they were probably sedges. I pulled it all out. Thanks. My plant is much happier looking.
