Five years ago we bought a Maytag dishwasher. We only use it about every other day. It takes us that long to fill it up. Tues evening we went to do the dishes and it wouldn't work. The start touchpad had gone out in it. So I called the repairman and he said that he would have to replace the whole touchpad console to the tune of $306. I said no! I didn't pay much more than that for it brand new. He also said that they had been having a lot of trouble with the touchpad consoles.
So we went to Lowes last night and bought a GE dishwasher. It dosen't have all the bells and whistles that we never used on the old one. It was on sale and after my Vets discount, I paid $300 for it. $6 less than the repairs to the old one! I am waiting on Lowes to call me to set up delivery and indtallation. And they will haul off the old one too.

Ah, yes, Maytag. When we moved here 3 1/2 years ago, there was a Maytag dishwasher in the house. We had been here about 3 months when it was recalled (darn thing could catch fire--who would think a tub of water could catch fire?). I called an "authorized repairman" who came out, broke the touch pad, didn't do the authorized repair, and left, promising to get a new touch pad. Three months later, after dealing with the "authorized idiot", the Better Business Bureau, and Maytag home office, I got another repairman and a new dishwasher. Guess what broke this May? Touch pad went out. The thing lasted almost two years. Fine product they have there.
We now have a Kitchenaid. I think you did well to get the GE. Interesting that the repairman told you they'd been having trouble with the consoles. My repairman (the good one) said that Maytag "used to be a good product."
We should form an "I hate Maytag" club!

I found 2 things out today. Maytag and Frigidaire are now both Chinese companies or are at least made in China. Ge products are made in the USA or Canada. I think their dishwashers are made primarily in Canada. As long as it works for more than 5 years I will be happy. The only reason I bought the Maytag was taht we had a maytag washer and dryer unit. It was warranted for 5 years and ended up lasting 18 years. It had a touchpad and that is what went out. I would have bought a new one, but they weren't available. The unit was so old they had stopped making repair parts for it. We have a toaster that my mother gave us 45 years ago when we got married. She got it at JC Penny and it was Penny's brand. Penncrest stamped right on the side of it. It has made toast every morning for 45 years and is still going strong. If they could make that kind of quality item 45 years ago, why can't they do it today? They probably can, we just couldn't afford it.

They don't make things to last anymore because then no one would need to buy a new one! Sad but true ... the mighty $$
    strikes again.

I know what you mean about quality. It's the same here.
I don't like buying things that have alot of extras on it--just more things that can go wrong and have to be fixed at gouged prices.
You know, Capt'n--I have noticed that if I want to repair things, finding a place that sells just the broken or worn part is almost non-existant...you have to buy a "console kit", with many parts. It makes me crazy. hahaha

BTW...what do you mean by getting a Vet's discount?

Lowes Home Center and Home Depot both give an active duty military or retired military and dependents a 10 % discount on there purchases. All you have to do is show your I D card. It isn't a lot, but in the past 2 years I have probably saved $100 to $200 dollars by using that. On the new dishwasher I saved $33.

That is a good thing, Capt'n. I always find it a good thing when there is public support for a nation's military members.
10% may not be an enormous amount at any given time...but like you said, it adds up over time.
