What does all this say to you? --The snow is finally melting --There are small buds on the plum trees and blueberry bushes --There are short, green points breaking through the soil(daffs) --The broadbeans are planted and germinating on the windowsills --The birds are singing more and flirting with eachother --The magpies are collectinf twigs for building a nest Yes...at least here in West-Friesland...on our plot I'm declaring the season officially open and has begun. Am I all alone here, or has it begun where you are as well?
First, let me say that is a gorgeous photo and makes me yearn for Spring. --Our snow is melting but we have had so much rain there is standing water. --Buds on the daffodils, quince and helleborus ready to pop --several flocks of robins It has been a harsh winter for East Tennessee. The only things I will be planting will be indoors until late March. But as soon as it drys out the prep work will begin. Spring blooms eternal in my heart , mother nature dictates the weather.
Here in central Ohio, it is snowing. but it is supposed to be a bit warmer this week. But no Spring sneaking around here!
It's snowing again here but before the ground was covered again I had bulbs shooting up. Daffodils and crocus's are around 2" out of the soil and my snowdrops are flowering!! There are buds on the fruit bushes and my birds are 'colouring up' in time for spring and the mating season. The rooks have started to build their nests so there's hope that spring is on its way here too. :-D
love the poppies sjoerd....they are poppies, right?! no signs of spring here....yet...good thing cause it's the beginning of February and that means more cold and snow on the horizon! but...we are winter sowing outside and in the greenhouse. starting onions, leeks and such. how do you start your broadbeans sjoerd? in paper pots? root trainers?

Nope, not quite here either... though it being Groundhog Day today, I guess we'll see what Punxsutawney Phil sees when he comes out of his burrow. If he sees his shadow, we're in for 6 more weeks of wintery weather... As for my little corner of the world, we have snow on the ground from Saturday, a bit more predicted tonight (1-3 inches) and another storm on the way on the weekend that may bring a larger amount of snow.... Prior to last Saturday's snow, I saw narcissus buds emerging. But the robins have not arrived yet...last year they were here by this date. We shall see -- but I cannot declare the start of my season quite yet...
Here in Nebraska, we are in the midst of a LONG, DREARY, COLD, winter season still. I'm just happy to see the sun!!! Alas, spring is still a ways away. However, I did see some daffodils poking up through in a very protected spot at my Mom's yesterday... It's nature's way. We have noticed the birds around here singing a bit more in the past week, maybe they know something?
The Dutch Master Daffs are poking their pointy little heads above the ground. We have Robins pretty much all year round so they do not say spring is here for me. When I start digging in the dirt, if I find earthworms close to the surface that is more of an indication that spring can't be too far off. The shrub rose bushes out front are becoming covered with new leaves New growth on shrub roses ( photo / image / picture from toni's Garden ) And the Safflower seeds dropped by messy birds have started germinating. Love the poppy - all the colors in the posted photos. Tennessee's snow and ice is finally starting to melt and though its been less than a week, I do miss seeing any bit of color. Thanks for sharing 0 even the dandelion was a welcome site! 8)
We are warming up and lots of things are budding up, the fig tree, the Carolina Jasmine, the roses are putting out new growth, the Stargazers are poking their little heads up and the daylilies are coming up everywhere, yes, I think it is official in south Louisiana, though I am sure we have another freeze lurking around the corner. Your poppies are beautiful Sjoerd.

In answer to your question about broadbeans: I start them in root trainers most years, but if they are in use, then newspaper pots. Normally I plant them in october, but this year I didn't. What a stroke of luck--they would have all been frozen to bits! Thanks for liking the poppies, NETTY. The white-trimmed ones were blow-ins. I saved some of the seeds and hope to get more this year. DROOPY-- Chuckling behind my hand. Hee hee hee. TONI--those rose bush and sasslowers are looking like they are taking-off. Well DOOLEY, I reckon it must. Shucks, one of the flowers has already set seed, by the looks of it. I'm glad you liked the poppy, JFKC. THey spontaneously pop-up some years and not others. I wonder where they come from...those ones with white. CAJUNBELLE--Thanks for liking the looks of those poppies. It sounds like you are officially on your way as well.
Oh my goodness Sjoerd what beautiful poppy.I'm so green with envy but I shouldn't be I have my Carolina jasmine to look at .Its still not infull bloom yet.
